Facebook Collects Your Data, Even If You Deactivate Your Account

Did you know? Even if you deactivate your account on its social network, Facebook continues to collect your personal data to serve you targeted advertisements. A deceptive practice, according to privacy experts like the creator of the DuckDuckGo search engine.

It is well known: Facebook collects a lot of data on users of its social network, in order to offer them targeted advertisements. Mark Zuckerberg’s firm will, in particular, analyze the interests of the internet user, based on the research he performs on the network or the content he “likes” for example.

What many ignore, however, is that Facebook continues to collect user data even when they deactivate their account.

Although the American company recommends in its data policy the deactivation of the account for better management of its private life, this step is not considered as the withdrawal of consent to data processing.

For good reason, Facebook assumes that the user is likely to return later. The social network, therefore, wants to be able to continue to offer targeted advertising to the user as soon as the account is reactivated.

For Gabriel Weinberg, CEO and founder of the DuckDuckGo search engine, this is a misleading practice on the part of Facebook. According to him, “to deactivate means to stop working, and therefore one would not expect the wheels to continue to turn”. He wants the firm to change its data collection policy, or at least to be more transparent.

For its part, Facebook specifies that deactivation is a measure of protection of privacy with regard to other members of the network. It makes it possible to become invisible to the eyes of other users, but not to those of Mark Zuckerberg and his henchmen …

The only way to stop data collection by Facebook is to permanently delete your account. Once this option is activated, you will have 30 days to retract during which the company will continue to collect your data.

Facebook Also Collects Your Data If You Don’t Have An Account

Unfortunately, even if you delete your account, it is unlikely that you will completely escape the grip of Facebook. Indeed, even if you have never had an account on the social network, the firm tracks Internet users using tools like the “Share” button.

Remember that the “Share” button appears today on 275 million web pages. Each time a user clicks on it, it is an opportunity for Facebook to analyze the content viewed by Internet users. Facebook is then able to deliver targeted advertising to Internet users through its Facebook Audience Network.

You will understand, it is now extremely difficult to completely withdraw from Facebook advertising targeting unless you completely stop browsing the web.
