This post will tell you which iPhone models are waterproof.
Your iPhone accidentally fell in the full bathtub, but nothing happened? Many iPhone models (not just the latest ones) are specially protected against damage from water and dust. This article can determine which devices are used for water protection and how reliable the protection is.
The parameter for waterproofness in smartphones is also referred to as the IP protection class. The abbreviation “IP” stands for “International Protection Mark.” The IP protection class is made up of two key figures. The first digit is relevant for protection against dust or other foreign particles.
The highest degree of protection of the first digit is expressed by the number 6 and indicates that the device is completely dust-tight and protected against contact. The second digit provides information about how waterproof the device is.
There are a total of 9 degrees of protection for water resistance. These determine whether an iPhone is only water-repellent or waterproof. Read more about the IP protection classes here. In the next chapter, we have listed the various devices for you, including the IP protection class, and explain how wet the respective iPhone can get. The IP certification can be found on all iPhone models from iPhone 7 onwards.
The iPhone 7/7 Plus, iPhone 8/8 Plus, iPhone X, and iPhone XR have IP protection class 67. The number 7 at the back stands for protection against temporary immersion. This means that the devices can withstand up to 30 minutes in water up to one meter deep. The iPhones XS, XS Max, and the iPhone 11 have the number 8 (IP68) and are protected against permanent submersion for up to 30 minutes in a water depth of up to two meters.
In the following table, we have listed the models again for you to give you an overview:
Protection against water damage decreases over time. Therefore, Apple (even if your iPhone has been classified as waterproof) does not guarantee water damage. If your iPhone has come into contact with water, you should never charge it while wet. First, wipe the iPhone with a soft, lint-free cloth. Also, make sure it is dry before opening the SIM tray. Place the iPhone where it cannot be exposed to further moisture. The heating and drying location is not recommended. Also, do not insert foreign objects such as cotton swabs or handkerchiefs into the device.
